Layback Origins and Technique Tips

One of the questions that came up in a recent Ask Carolena episode was about the Layback — that slow, dramatic backbend that has become one of the most recognizable movements in FCBD® Style. I loved this part of the conversation, because Carolena shared some wonderful insights about where the move came from, how it has evolved, and how to approach it with both strength and grace.

The Origins

Carolena explained that the Layback didn’t start out in its current form. In the early days, dancers would bend their knees and push their hips forward — what she called an “improper layback.” Visually it gave the impression of leaning back, but it wasn’t the safe or aligned way to move.

It wasn’t until later, with a deeper understanding of kinesiology, that the Layback became what we know today: a true arch of the upper body supported by breath and core strength.

What a Layback Really Is

“A layback is literally a lay back.” It’s not about forcing your hips forward, but about letting the chest and spine open while the lower body stays grounded and strong.

This distinction makes a world of difference. Not only does it look more effortless, but it also protects the body from unnecessary strain.

Technique & Tips

Later in the conversation, Carolena touched on some really practical things to keep in mind:

  • Breath: She pointed out how important it is not to hold your breath. Inhaling to expand and exhaling to soften helps the body wave unfold naturally.

  • Core strength: She reminded us that the Layback is about isometric engagement — that balance of holding and releasing at the same time.

The Layback is such a powerful and captivating movement. It’s about anchoring yourself, finding your breath, and letting the body open into the music.
